Commander’s Column – Jeff Carroll, Sr.
OOHRAH!! From your Commander. I would like to thank everyone for the help I have received since being your Commander this year. There are many good ideas that are beginning to come about that will make Post 28 even better. It takes teamwork to get the job done because no one single person can do it all.
The National Convention in Milwaukee is now in the past. Jimmie Foster was elected our new National Commander for 2010-2011. We wish him success in his endeavor.
The lounge will be getting a new look this month. Painting will be done on Sept. 6 while the Post is closed for Labor Day. As our building ages even more, we will soon be in need of replacing some air conditioning units, furnace, refrigerators, and ice machines. This is why we have worked so hard the past several years in making sure we have the money when these things are due to be replaced. Thank goodness we have a team of members that know how to look ahead and plan for these types of things in the future.
Don't forget about our annual picnic coming up on the 11th of this month. Also, the Early Bird Dinner date has been changed to September 25, so make sure you have your dues for 2011 paid to be eligible to participate. All ticket holders MUST be in Veterans Hall to claim their prize if they win.
Positive ideas are what we are looking for this year. If you have an idea that will improve the Post, then bring your idea to our meetings.
Always remember those who are not able to be here with us at this time. Always support our troops and keep them in your prayers.
*** The Deadline for articles to go in the October PostScript is Monday, September 20th***
1st Vice Commander - Coleman Sumrall
Between March and November of 1919, the American Legion was founded, Chartered by Congress, had its first National Convention, and adopted its first Constitution and Preamble. A resolution was adopted supporting the Boy Scouts of America as its first youth program.
Membership is important. It all begins by "just asking" a prospective candidate to join. Give them a little explanation of what the American legion represents and what we do for our veterans, the community, and our youth. The money you pay for dues is very important and always goes toward a worthy cause.
Remember, 2011 membership cards are now available. Pay your dues early to be eligible for the Early Bird Dinner in September. You could win money that evening as a partial refund on your dues.
Be proud Legionnaires!
2nd Vice Commander - Beany Smith
Greetings from the Quarter Deck. I hope this Post Script finds you in good health and spirits. I also hope you are enjoying the "cooler" weather as much as I am when it is here. As we are now approaching fall, I want to remind you that this time of year is a great time to come to the Post and enjoy time with family or other members.
We recently had a bus trip to Evansville's Casino Aztar and what a great time was had by all. Thanks to our members that joined me on this trip and to the bartenders and others that helped with the preparation. Great job!
It's just around the corner - Sept. 11 Post picnic. Food contests will be held this year for the best covered dish, best dessert, and best salad. There will be four first place winners of $25.00 in each category. You can only win in one category, however. The picnic begins at 12:00 noon and will end at 8:00pm. There will be a giant slide and inflatable Castle for the kids. Also included will be a band, a Corn Hole Tournament, and plenty of delicious food prepared by our Squadron of the Sons of the American Legion. The picnic is for members in good standing, so make sure your dues is paid. Please have your membership card with you.
Also, don't forget the Early Bird Dinner date has been moved to September 25.
God bless you and Our Troops!
S.A.L. News - Harrell Sorrels, Commander
Welcome all new members of Squadron 28. Please be an Active Member as we need new ideas for fundraisers. We will no longer be participating in the Lanesville Heritage event. At the present time, we are raffling a Henry Golden Boy 0.22 LR Repeater rifle. You can purchase your pull tab at the bar for $3.00 a pull or two pulls for $5.00. This is on a "300" chance board. The winner will be required to pick up the rifle at Two Brothers Gun Shop in New Albany. The rifle is on display at the Post.
Unfortunately, we no longer have a booth during Harvest Homecoming. Money must be raised differently from now on so that we can meet our obligation for donations.
If you want to participate in the Early Bird Party in September, you will need to pay your 2011 dues prior to the dinner.
Our meetings are the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm. Come join us and see what we do here at the Post.
The deadline for articles to appear in the October PostScript will be September 20th.
American Legion Riders - Director, James L. Shipley
Greetings from your American Legion Riders!
We recently purchased a Remington 870 smooth bore shotgun to raffle at the Lanesville Heritage Weekend on Sept. 10-12. Be sure to visit us and stop by our booth to purchase a ticket on a chance to win. We will also have brochures and applications for membership in the American Legion for anyone who might consider joining.
There are still plenty of great rides that we have planned and we are looking forward to cooler weather. Our membership has grown to 49 and I'd like to welcome Terry Todd as our newest Rider. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00pm in Veterans Hall. Have a safe fall everyone and keep the shiny side up.
Thank you and Smooth Roads!
